A trip to Berlin

TRIP TO BERLIN has obviously appeal to tourists interested in history, but there’s plenty to entice those more interested in socialising and shopping too.

The Berlin Wall, the iconic barrier that once separated the former East and West Germanys, in an obvious first stop on any TRIP TO BERLIN. Here you’ll also be able to take in the famous ‘topography of terror’ exhibition, based at a site once occupied by former SS officials and Secret State police – invaluable insight into the former Nazi regime.

Away from the Wall, however, are a host of other delights to explore on your trip. The Berlin Philharmonic is a delight for music fans, offering astounding performances within an architecturally-stunning space. Museum-lovers are well catered for too, with Museum Island being home to three stunning places – the Altes, the Bode and the Pergamon, the latter of which features the quite spectacular Altar of Zeus. The Brandenburg Gate is an 18th-century neoclassical monument in Berlin, and one of the best-known landmarks of Germany.

Animal lovers are recommended to take a trip to both Tierpark and Berlin Zoos, on opposite sides of the city.If you’re keen to get away from the confines of the streets, then a trip to Tiergarten is in order. This beautiful park stretches through central Berlin, and it’s well worth enjoying an hour or two strolling along its peaceful river.

Shoppers should also enjoy a trip to Berlin – Kaufhaus des Westens, based in Berlin’s most popular shopping area, Kudamm, is the largest department store in Europe, rammed with designer labels and a rooftop cafe for when you need a break from retail therapy. Elsewhere, Hackescher Market is stacked with boutiques and chain stores, and Friedrichstrasse is full of high-end stores such as Gucci and Cartier. And with a huge range of restaurants, clubs and bars, including the famous Panorama Bar, Berlin has no end of spots for socialising, drinking and eating. Typical Berliner meal is Currywurst (which gained popularity with post-war construction workers rebuilding the city.

It’s fair to say that Berlin is one of Europe’s most beautiful, varied and important cities. A trip to Berlin is sure to be an experience you’ll never forget, and hope one day to repeat.
